HOW TO START A STREET BRANDMay 10, 2013
We’re a strong supporter of upcoming and established street wear labels over ‘ere! Constantly on the lookout for the next innovators, even checking out their studios when we get the chance!
Street wear fashion has become its on genre in the past few years. We’re living in a world where if you’re doing something good, someone will notice, and when it comes to clothing lines under this money-making umbrella they’re either blowing up over night, re-building on a strong history or receiving co-signs from your favourite artist.
But one is not simply handed these successes – there are rules to this, so we wrote you a manual. Let us guide you with our tips and advice for starting, growing and ensuring longevity of a street wear brand with this ‘how to’ guide…
Plan like there’s no tomorrow
Aint no half-stepping when it comes to these sorts of things, so get to planning! Do your research, know your finances, find the cheapest of everything you need without sacrificing the quality. Easier said then done, but again, plan fams.
Be like the others
Now bare with us here. We’re not saying copy a brand all the way down to the name, unless you like court dates, just look at how the current favs are doing it. What’s keeping them around and loved by the masses? Have footsteps to follow, but make your own path at the same time…there’s a difference between being inspired and straight thievery.
Who are you selling to?
Get philosophical with this one. Ask yourself “If I wasn’t me, would I buy this?” or “If my designs fall in the woods, and no-one is around…did they ever exist?”
…Ok maybe not. Basically, would you pay money for what you’re making?
There’s strength in numbers! Whilst riding solo is perfectly fine and more streamlined, partnering up with those who have the same drive and goals as you makes life a lot easier. Collaborations with other labels or events is the new marketing move. Club nights, small art exhibs – anything which reflects your brand in the right way. Or you could sponsor the opening of that new kebab shop down the street! What, no?
An obvious one, but you’d be surprised how many think it’ll all just fall in their laps. You’ve got no excuse with the internet – being free and all – to not reach out to these bloggers and buyers, and there’s always an event where you can mingle with some industry insiders – keep your eyes to the tweets and ears to the streets to find out what’s going down in your town.
It’s ok to fail
It really is. All the big dogs had a good few go-arounds before finally getting t it right, and boy howdy did they get it right! It’s all a part of the process.
At the end of the day, enjoy what you create. It won’t feel like a chore if you’re doing what you love and staying true to your ethos. Be good to those who are good to you…the relationships you build will make ALL the difference. Trust.
