HIGH SUMMER WITH ROSANNA WEBSTERMay 18, 2013
Look at that awesome collaboration of photography and design up top there, it’s nice isn’t it? Well it’s our sneak preview into out new High Summer look book coming real soon at Urban Outfitters, just watch this space and all your summer fashion needs will come true.
You may well know how much we love obscure locations for our photo shoots, (we’ve just come back from Berlin) but this time round we went for something completely different, inviting designer Rosanna Webster to add her photographic collage skills to Urban’s summer fashion collection.
We’re massive fans of Rosanna’s work, so we thought we would share the love and have a chat with this London/Brighton designer, learning all about her inspirations and where she likes to hang. Here’s what went down…
UO: Hello Rosanna, where are you right now?
RW: Hello! I’m at home…
UO: So you’ve recently collaborated with Urban to add some spice to our High Summer look book, what was the inspiration behind the design?
RW: I wanted to inject a real summery feel to the look book. Working with photographer Daniel Thomas Smith to add strong bold shapes, lots of bright colour and pattern.
UO: You have a long and impressive list of clients you have worked with, but if given the choice to work with ANYONE in the world, who would it be?
RW: Erm Ryan Gosling…
UO: So your blog features a stunning mix of photography and collage, is this something you like to integrate into your designs?
RW: Yes, I take a camera with me wherever I go. These are a mix of personal diary shots of people and places (mainly cats); and then aside from this a sort of scrapbook of textures, compositions and little ideas for my work and to use within designs.
UO: We see you studied Illustration at Brighton before heading into the freelance world, what tips would you give to students who want to fling themselves into a similar career after they graduate?
RW: Don’t put off contacting people you want to work with or for, recently I got in touch with a favourite photographer and found myself having coffee with him the next day. Collaborate and say yes to projects that are outside of your comfort zone, it can push you to take on new ideas and processes and you can always find a way to make things work.
UO: Where’s your favourite place to hang out?
RW: Nice big open spaces like the Heath and Richmond Park.
UO: Imagine yourself in an alternative universe where arts and illustration simply did not exist. What do you think the other you would be getting up to?
RW: I went through a stage of thinking about studying architecture? Failing this I’d be Beyonce.
UO: We’ve noticed you like to use flowers within a whole load of your designs, which one is your favourite and why?
RW: I couldn’t say, but I just bought a sunflower plant for my boyfriend and I have high hopes
UO: Finish the sentence. “In three years time I will ________________________”
RW: … be making more film work. I really love the whole process.
UO: Your creative game is strong, but do you have any obscure talents people might not know about?
RW: Magical powers… BUT I AM NOT ALLOWED TO DISCUSS THEM.
UO: Summer is usually the time people experience the finer things in life. What’s you favourite summer time memory?
RW: Lombok in Indonesia a few summers back with friends, lots of mountain trekking, snorkelling, really bad attempts at surfing, empty beaches with water buffalo for company, beautiful food and all super cheap. Closer to home… cycle days along the sea front and over the downs in Brighton.
UO: Tell us a joke…
RW: Who are the coolest people that work at hospitals?… the ultrasound people!
Hit up Urban Outfitters next week for the entire High Summer collection, featuring more of Rosanna’s beautiful photo-collage talents.
