AURIA X MARGOT BOWMANJune 1, 2013
Such a vibrant thing is the Auria x Bowman print swimwear collection available at Urban Outfitters…we just had to pay the talented duo a visit!
We went down to Margot Bowman’s studio in the East London where we were greeted by the pair, had a chat with Diana Auria on the collection, and also found out what her favourite scene from Home Alone 2 was…yeah, we’re not afraid to ask the hard-hitting questions here!
UO: Hello. Introduce yourself?
DA: Hi. I’m Diana Auria and Auria is my label.
UO: How did the Auria x Margot Bowman collaboration come about?
DA: We were flat mates in London a few years back. At the time I was studying Fashion Contour at London College of Fashion and Margot was doing graphics at Central St. Martins. I remember going into her bedroom one day and seeing all these amazing illustrations on the wall. A couple of years down the line when it came to doing my graduate collection, I decided to do a swimwear range and just thought Margot’s work would look great as a swimwear print. We decided to develop and extend the graduate collection into a full range and were privileged to be able to debut it at London Fashion week on the Estethica exhibition.
UO: What was the inspiration behind the designs?
DA: Artemis…the Greek goddess of hunting. That is where the bow and arrow idea came from.
UO: How important is studio layout or location in perfecting your craft?
DA: It’s not too important for me. Nowadays everything is so mobile…especially with technology and communication. I create my designs straight on to the laptop, which means I can create my studio anywhere I want. I find it refreshing and inspiring being in different environments.
UO: Describe your workspace to us…
DA: My studio is very different to Margot’s. It’s basically organised chaos with pictures of 80‘s Cindy Crawford plastered on the walls.
UO: One of your areas of expertise is swimwear. Does this mean you’re an excellent swimmer?
DA: It is kind of ironic actually…as I can’t swim. But I’m very good at laying on a sun lounger.
UO: You won last years’ ‘Fashion Innovation Award for United Vision’ at The London College of Fashion graduate show. How did it feel? And did you give a heartfelt speech?
DA: It was a complete shock. I didn’t realise that there were even awards being giving out. I felt very privileged. Unfortunately I wasn’t given the opportunity to make a heartfelt speech…but if I could just take this time to say one now…thanks mum and dad! haha.
UO: How different or alike are the swimwear and lingerie fashion industry? Would you create a lingerie line in the future?
DA: I don’t have a lingerie range just yet but am planning one for the future so keep an eye out. The biggest difference with the swimwear and lingerie industry is the seasons. Swimwear is a bit of an odd one as it’s seasonal…when it’s summer in the UK…it’s winter in Australia. Why can’t the world all be the same season at the same time! It would make my life so much easier.
UO: Tell us 4 things you’ve done or doing this week…
1. Made some sexy speedos.
2. Watching my boyfriend’s band ‘Rudimental’ support The Stone Roses.
3. Capital FM Summer Ball at Wembley Stadium.
4. Working on the next collections.
UO: Would you rather go on a 2-week holiday of your wildest dreams or spend 4 days with anyone you wished for…but you couldn’t leave your home. And it’s cold. And the gas/electricity is out.
DA: I think I will choose the holiday as I haven’t had one in years and I am desperate to wear this collection on the beach.
UO: What’s next?
DA: Another collaboration together. Maybe a men’s swim line and lingerie!
UO: Describe yourself in the form of a childhood toy, and why…
DA: Cupcake dolls, because they smell good.
UO: Tell us your favourite scene in Home Alone…
DA: Home Alone 2. When Kevin is in the hotel and puts up an inflatable man puppet in the shower pretending it’s his dad. The song in that scene is amazing as well.
