UO REVIEW: THE XX NIGHT + DAY

The xx returned to UK soil this weekend to bring their Night + Day festival to Hertfordshire’s Hatfield House. With a grueling tour that sees them cross many oceans (and play some truly unique areas such as Berlin’s Spreepark), it all was all too apparent their fans were too damn excited to have them back.

Re-working hits from their debut album “xx” and smashing even newer tracks from “co-exist”, the xx show was flawless. A duet of vocals in perfect husky harmony, booming bass lines, clear cutting guitars and Jamie xx’s tekkers drum pad action all worked together to bring a live sound that was much more aggressive compared to the chilled vibes of the xx recordings. Heck, they even played their “Great Gatsby” tune, its live debut! Now that’s special…

The crowd’s xx love was made clear following the final notes of breakthrough hit VCR. A crescendo of cheers, applause, whoops and hollers prolonged for what felt like hours. The xx gang looked almost stunned by the response, speechless until a clearly emotional Romy approached the mic… “We can not even begin to tell you how much it means to be here, we’re overwhelmed.” Now we’ve all heard the “I’m so happy to be here” spiel before, but there was honesty to her tone, clearly indicating a genuine respect for their fans. Bravo the xx, bravo!

The festival adopted the pendulum effect between two stages earlier in the day, sending fans back and forth to enjoy sets from DJs and bands alike. We arrived just as Jamie XX ripped up the decks – the first of his three sets of the festival! Madman.

Policia were next to hit the stage with their beautifully ambient tunes. Who knew such a powerful voice could emerge from a delicate looking lady. Even xx bass man Oliver Sim graced the crowd to see it all happen. (That’s the back of his head, we promise).

And then the mighty Solange whipped it good with her feel-good tunes and wild stage shapes.
