AUTUMN CATALOGUE: HONEST AL’SSeptember 11, 2013
Straight outa’ Stockholm – We’ve got some tales to tell about our journey to this fine Swedish City – exploring the stories behind our unique shoot locations.
Whilst on our adventures, we had it on good advice to find Honest Al’s barbershop in the heart of central Söder. Little did we know we’d be walking into one of most radical rock ‘n’ roll barber shops we have ever seen- a space full of punk, skate, surf and rock memorabilia.
Blades at the ready, Al himself cut-throat shaved us clean, while he told tales of his life in Stockholm.
UO: Hey Al. Tell us about your awesome Barber shop…
AL: The height of the barber shop culture was in the 1920s, but I didn’t want a store that looked 100 years old. So from the beginning I filled the shop full of punk-rock and surf memorabilia – I wanted to connect the two different worlds.
UO: Where did the name come from?
AL: My friends told me I should call my shop something to do with me, and then my tattoo guy was like, “Honest Al!” I liked it, it reminds me of a poker player from the Old West- Honest Joe with an ace up his sleeve.
UO: Tell us a story…
AL: I was on a shaving course in Rotterdamn and I had this one guy, who was like two meters tall and covered in tattoos, sit in my chair with a first aid kit. He looked at me and said, “This isn’t for me, it’s for you if you cut me.
UO: Why come to Al’s for a cut-throat shave?
AL: It’s luxury here, like a spa – my clients have their own whiskey in a cabinet, they come in for a nice clean shave and friendly chat.
