CAREER CRUISIN’ WITH OLIVER DUNNSeptember 16, 2013
Being a student can be a daunting part of your life – outside those somewhat truthful clichés of sitting about in your pajamas all day, eating cold baked beans from the tin and partying more hours than studying – there’s a lot to think about when it comes to your future ambitions, right?
Well students, we’ve got your back! Bringing you some top tips from the endless list of successful individuals we know here at Urban Outfitters.
Looking to get your foot in the door of Graphic design? Well we have just the man to throw you some advice – Urban Outfitters Graphic Designer Oliver Dunn.
As part of a large creative crew here at Urban, Olly takes on a variety of graphics duties including event flyers, store packaging, window displays, in store signs and a ton more creative projects. He also works as a freelancer illustrator outside of UO walls – what a talented chap! See below for some top tips from Olly…
If you are at Uni, Intern as much as you possibly can! It’s the only time you can work for free and have a student loan to help with the finance.
Also, interning is the best way to meet people and also takes away the scare factor of starting a design role after university.
Work really hard and be nice to people along the way, you never know who you might end up working with in the future.
Don’t get disheartened if you don’t get a job straightaway – keep yourself busy with personal projects.
Meet as many people as you can in the industry. The best place to do this is at exhibitions and workshops – the more people you get to know the better.
Keep a sketchbook with you at all times! Keep notes and ideas about up-and-coming projects you want to get involved in, or people you meet along the way. It can be a really good reference point if you need ideas for a self-initiated project.
Carry on doing the work you enjoy.
