CAREER CRUISIN’ WITH VERITY PEMBERTONSeptember 16, 2013
Being a student can be a daunting part of your life – outside those somewhat truthful clichés of sitting about in your pajamas all day, eating cold baked beans from the tin and partying more hours than studying – there’s a lot to think about when it comes to your future ambitions, right?
Well students, we’ve got your back! Bringing you some top tips from the endless list of successful individuals we know here at Urban Outfitters.
If Fashion Design is where you want to be, then takes notes from Cooperative Women’s Wear designer Verity Pemberton.
Exclusive to Urban Outfitters, Cooperative is one of our most loved women’s wear brands – creating vintage inspired collections with a delicate dose of nostalgia and quirky charm. See below for Verity’s top tips on how to crack into the Fashion Design world…
Whilst at uni really enjoy your creative freedom. All the work your doing is essentially your own, that is something really special.
Create your own projects to keep your work fresh and exciting.I always carry a little sketchbook with me so I can scribble down my ideas, and I’m constantly tearing images to add to my scrapbook of inspiration.
Keep on the search for internships and just send your work out there. The more you apply the more chance you will have of getting one.
If you land an internship, always ask questions! It makes you look more eager and you will learn so much more about the industry and how it works.
Try your hardest meet people – the fashion industry, however large, is a reasonably close-knit community. Meet as many people as possible and this will lead to more contacts. I got my job today through a friend of a friend.
Keep going and don’t give up. Fashion is a super tough industry to get into, and you won’t get anywhere if you give up early on. It’s all about perseverance and making sure you get noticed for your talents.
