CAREER CRUISIN' WITH JAY JONES

The career tips just keep on coming!

If you see yourself as a future fashion designer, you’ll be on some solid ground if you follow these tips from Jay Jones – menswear designer for Urban exclusive brand, Shore Leave.

Shore Leave re-interprets the staple pieces of a man’s wardrobe. Each collection takes inspiration from a broad range of heritage menswear and contemporises it through the latest silhouettes, detailing, fabrications and colour.

‘Shore leave’ is the term used to express the time when sailors escape the confines of shipboard life and cut loose. It expresses cherished times when the ‘ship’s in’ and sailors fan throughout port towns in search of entertainment, drinks and women. The Shore Leave label evokes this time of liberty, with each collection thoughtfully focused on this global adventurer and life on the water.

Learn your fabrics. Fabric knowledge is a key element to a successful range- you can have the best designs but if your fabrics are off it ruins it!

The devil is in the detail; be meticulous about detailing and learn new techniques and twists.

Take your time over colour choices, your colour palette can make or break a collection.

Always keep up-to-date on designers and brands that are killing it and analyse why.

Travel as much as possible and broaden your horizons.

Stay savvy on trends but keep your own identity and aesthetic and find ways of mixing the two to produce a successful range.

Be as conceptual as possible but keep in mind you have to make money somewhere down the line…

Have an idea where you want to end up. We can’t all be Haute Couture but think what section of the industry you would be happy to be in, and this will show through in your work.

Time management is a great quality to have. Don’t under estimate how long it takes to make your work, mount it up and make it look professional- there’s nothing worse than nights without sleep days before a deadline, so organize your workload.

Enjoy your projects. If you love what you are doing and throw yourself into it, it shows through massively.
