MUM’S THE WORDMarch 27, 2014
Before dealing with nappies, pocket money demands and teen tantrums your mum had an entire life – and wardrobe – sans you. IMAGINE. Embracing the Mother’s Day spirit this weekend, we asked the UO crew to dig around their attics and show us vintage snaps cool-as-ice mammas.
Show your ma some love this Mother’s Day and send us snaps on Instagram of your mum back in the day with #UOmamma in the caption and we’ll put our faves on Instagram. Unitards, bottle-glass specs and insane shoulder pads all welcome…
Kat Waud, Visual Merchandising Manager at UO Guildford
This was taken in 1976. Massive hair, massive glasses, layering polo necks, and a classic car. What’s not to love? My mum was a babe in ’76 and is still one today!
Anne Taylor, WW Department Manager at UO Camden
This is my mum aged 18 rocking a cute pink two-piece in the ’70s. What a babe.
Roxy Mirshahi, Website Copywriter at UO HQ
Stylish and serene, this was taken probably not long before she turned down an offer to become a fashion designer in New York (she fell pregnant with me instead. Oops). She’s never given up on anything – or anyone – is full of wisdom (and mischief), and is everything I aspire to be as a parent.
Vincent Navissi, Junior Marketing and Ecommerce Executive for Germany at UO HQ
This is from 1984 when my mom was 17. She ran away from home and lived in a squatter house with some friends, which is where the picture was taken. She’s wearing a second-hand black velvet dress she cut and reworked herself. Somehow I believe she always knew she would have me at quite a young age (20 years old) so she had to let all the crazy out before. She’s still crazy though, in a good way obviously. I couldn’t think of anyone else’s scarves I’d rather steal.
Silvia Wolff, WACC Department Manager at UO Cologne
This was taken in 1987 in Poland shortly before me, my brother and mum emigrated to Germany where my father already lived. She did this photo shoot with a friend to send pics to my dad who was already living in Germany. She’s wearing cool ’80s style – a customised shirt, high waist pants and stilettos. I wish my mom a Happy Mother’s Day ‘cause she is a very strong woman who had many challenges in her life.
Maria Budnikova, Visual Merchandiser at UO Marble Arch
This was taken in 1977 at a summer camp in Russia. Her teenage hotness era…
Claire Taylor, Paid Search & Affiliate Marketing Manager at UO HQ
This was taken at a photo shoot. The top is designed by Vivienne Westwood and from her Kings Road shop, Sex which was run by Vivienne and Malcolm McLaren.
Emily Billington, WW Department Manager at UO Bristol
I want to say Happy Mother’s Day to literally the most amazing mum ever. She’s rocking the original ’90s Urban Renewal look with a silk rayon shirt and Levi’s high waisted jeans. Babe!
Kate Prior, Digital Designer at UO HQ
This is my mum in the early ’70s. She still sometimes puts cute pictures on her bedroom wall. Most recently Brandon Boyd from Incubus. My dad is a good sport.
Lily Pandeles, WACC Department Manager at UO Camden
My cute little Geordie mam back in the ’90s chilling out in my gran’s garden. If only she had kept these amazing stripy trousers.
Kate McQuillan, MW Department Manager at UO Dublin
This was taken about 20 years ago out in our back garden in Dublin. I love the mix of prints and knit.
