UO EXCLUSIVE: SUPREMEBEINGJuly 24, 2014
Way back in ’99, UK streetwear brand Supremebeing was born, among a group of friends who shared a passion for screen-print, art and street culture – all combined with the incentive to create high-quality cut-and-sew threads. Now in their 15th year of being, this expanding brand have stayed true to their roots, becoming one of the most prominent streetwear labels in the UK and beyond.
We’re proud to announce that we’ve joined forces with Supremebeing to create a UO Exclusive collection. Check it out HERE.
To delve deeper into the story of the brand, we caught some words with 2/4 founding members – Creative Director, Yoc, and Designer, Skuff, to explore the intricate design details that reflect 15 years of streetwear heritage.
FREEDOM OR DEATH TEE
Yoc: This tee is inspired by the ethos and attitude of the One Percenters – a concept that reflects outsiders and underdogs doing their own thing. This ethos was born from the days when Supremebeing team were just starting out, and we stick by it to this day.
Skuff: It’s true; everyone loves an underdog don’t they? Especially in the UK. The thing is, we’ve always felt like we’re punching above our weight, ever since the brand’s conception from our tiny little independent store. We were a skate shop that also sold clothing, music, art and coffee, or clothing and record store that sold skateboards and spray paint. Either way you look at it, the shop wasn’t really big enough for any one of these ventures, but we made it work and launched a clothing brand from the same platform at the same time, on our own, and against all odds.
GRAFT TEE BLACK
Yoc: The sewing needles incorporated in to the Graft design represent the journey from being t-shirt designers to who we are today – a fully fledged cut-and-sew offering. Regardless of the end product – durability and quality has always been at the heart of what we do.
Skuff: Yeah and the term ‘Union Made’ works on two levels for us. The first refers to the actual union made between the four founders when they began the project that would eventually become Supremebeing. The second is a nod to our Fair Isle and home. The UK is a breeding ground for creativity, diversity and culture – we’re proud to be a part of that.
Yoc: Supremebeing was established way back in ’99. Here, the Roman numerals, XV, boldly mark our 15 years of being.
Skuff: I remember the tee that launched the brand name; when Yoc was younger he worked at a chippy and got his fingers caught in the potato-cutting machine, putting an end to his budding calligraphy career. They did rebuild him, but one finger is still too short. He had this photocopy of his handprint, which looked all mad and alien. He used it for a tee design called The Maker with the word Supremebeing underneath it… and so it all began.
