ARTIST OF THE WEEK #3 – KALEN HOLLOMONSeptember 17, 2014
As the world turns its focus to this season’s most exciting fashion weeks, we set our eyes upon New York artist, Kalen Hollomon, whose humorous and inventive style twists our view of luxury brands.
Using cutouts from fashion adverts and magazines, Hollomon places images onto everyday people and ordinary situations while roaming the streets of NY City. The result is two diverse cultures colliding in odd and alluring ways. His collection of animations follow suit, adding an extra layer of surreal and subtle sexuality.
We caught a few words with Kalen to find out more about his inspiration.
“I’m inspired by fashion; I love fashion and the transformative power of clothing so it shows up in my work a lot. I like to subvert big luxury branding and imagery, and think about how labels and logos can change perception and also how that same big brand, big name influence is paralleled in the art world.”
“Right now I like collage, whether in studio or out in the streets. I try to pair or deconstruct images that speak to me in some way, to create a new dialogue and a shifted view on the mundane or everyday fleeting moments, or some preconceived notion of what is sexy. I hope viewers linger on my images and feel some sense of either romance of disgust, or maybe some combination of the two. I like where those two things intersect, and also secrets; I’m always trying to get to what lies beneath the surface.” – KH
