ARTIST OF THE WEEK – REN ROXJanuary 21, 2015
They say film photography is dead, but whoever they are clearly haven’t seen the amazing photographs produced by Ren Rox, or the thousands of other emerging film photographers for that matter.
Alongside her growing portfolio of commissioned fashion photography, Ren produces personal projects that range from experimental film burning to trippy dream-like portraits. In her ongoing project, For The Love of Black and White, she loads her camera with high ISO film to heighten the charm of grainy textures, and experiments with perfectly executed double exposures. The resulting photographs wouldn’t look out of place on album sleeves from the ‘60s.
“I grew up with film cameras, taking snapshots on holiday as a kid, but it wasn’t until later that I decided to get more serious about photography. I bought an SLR and read every book I could find.
For The Love of Black and White is an ongoing series of pictures I take for myself, whether on commission or for fun, travelling or just walking around, it doesn’t really matter as it’s always growing and changing. I enjoy how you have to think in more abstract terms when taking monochrome pictures, especially when the type of subjects that steal my attention are nature, people and landscapes, so I aim approach them in a unique way.” – Ren Rox
