URBAN OUTFITTING – THE OXFORD SHIRTMarch 9, 2015
Some like it all the way up. Some like it down. Some like two at a time. But one thing every man seems to agree on is that the classic button-down Oxford shirt is solid performer in that difficult-to-navigate smart-casual territory.
Originally made by Scottish fabric mills in the 19th century, the Oxford shirt was made from Oxford cloth – a basket-weave cotton designed for casual wear. Initially, the shirt was popular among polo players who adopted the style for the fabric’s breathability (a practical option for physical activity), and later added buttons to their collars to stop the them flapping around while they dashed about on their big posh horses. In 1896, this adaptation caught the eye of a Brooks Brothers tailor who began to add button-down collars to all their Oxford shirts.
Since then, the Oxford shirt has evolved to become a go-to staple for generations of menswear designers. Constantly redefined and worn in new ways, it has found its way into most male wardrobes.
With a huge range of the staple arriving on our shelves from the likes of Farah and Shore Leave by Urban Outfitters, we got some of the guys from our London stores to button up their best shirts and show us their favourite ways to wear them.
Alex Feery – Menswear Team Leader
“I have a few oxford shirts that I usually wear when I wanna look sharp. When I have one on, people tend me to tell me that I look like “I’m going somewhere”, which speaks volumes about my more casual day-to-day style. For this outfit I styled it with a bomber jacket and chinos, and left the shirt un-tucked for a more relaxed feel.” – Alex

“My personal style tends to revolve around streetwear – skinny jeans, oversized t-shirts and trainers are my go to staples. When it comes to wearing an oxford shirt, I like to wear it open with a plain tee underneath, it’s much more laid back that way.” – Viet

“I’d describe my style as smart casual, I like to dress down during the day and then bring it back up for the evenings. The Oxford shirt can be worn in multiple ways but my go to look is under a jumper. Looking smart is important, but this outfit is relaxed and comfortable too.” – Lewis
