BEHIND THE BRAND – THE FIFTH LABELMarch 17, 2015
Since being born in the summer months of 2014, Australian brand The Fifth has quickly gathered a cult following for their uncomplicated, considered approach to style staples. With a focus on both quality and wearability, and hints of high fashion-inspired design, each collection redefines the expectations of how everyday style can be delivered.
With The Fifth Label Mirage collection now available at UO, we caught up with head designer Amy Hicks to discover more about her recent creations.
UO: How did you first discover you wanted to be a designer?
AMY HICKS: I was studying a Bachelor’s of Visual Art and constantly found myself drawn to textiles and fashion. Once I completed the course I thought I would give fashion a go. As it happened, I loved it and have been obsessed ever since. It’s funny how you start out thinking you will become one thing and then you end up as another. I think as long I was doing something creative and visual I would be happy – but fashion design makes me the happiest.
UO: What’s the inspiration behind the Mirage collection?
AH: Carefree summer vibes; you know, that free feeling you have when summer hits. This feeling combined with our classic stripes and standout prints brings ‘Mirage’ to life. I really wanted this collection to be effortless. It’s one of those things where the more you try to make something effortless, the more effort it takes! I hope I’ve found the right balance – I’m really happy with all the styles so I’m confident in this collection.
UO: Do you have a favourite piece from the collection?
AH: My favourite piece would have to be the Wear Both Ways Roadhouse skirt. It was the first time I’ve designed something you can wear reversible and it worked out so well. Having designs that can be worn multiple ways in a collection is something I believe The Fifth girl will really appreciate. It’s so important to me to make sure our ranges are as versatile as possible.
UO: Where do you initially look to for inspiration to your prints?
AH: We get inspiration from everywhere – blogs, street style, locations and pop culture – the list goes on! We have so many creative people in our workspace and everyone who collaborates on The Fifth has their own individual style, which I love. They inspire me every day. We also work closely with print houses that create prints that reflect the vibe of each collection and help lift the styles that we have chosen.
UO: What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers?
AH: Get as much experience as you can! Try everything, even if it isn’t exactly what you want to do, because in the end it might just get you to where you want to go. No one’s path seems to go directly to their dream job – it takes a lot of hard work and trial and error to end up in the right spot… You’ll know when you get there – I certainly have!
