Zoe: Assistant Photography Manager
WORK THIS WAY
How did you get your job?
I started as an intern here at Urban and have worked my way up over the last four years.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Having an idea and then seeing it all come life at a photo shoot.

What’s the best thing you’ve done as part of your job?
This year we went to LA and Palm Springs to shoot our Spring campaign. It was incredible – I’d had a photo of the Ace Hotel on my desk for years and finally got to go and shoot there.

Kris: European Menswear Branded Buyer
WORK THIS WAY

How did you get into buying?
Hard work and perseverance! I started interning in showrooms when I was 16 and knew I wanted to be a menswear buyer when I started questioning other peoples’ product selections. I got myself a job with an independent store and spent seven years working before I came to Urban.

What’s the best thing about your job?
There are lots of things I love about my job: getting to travel, seeing collections six months ahead of everybody else, creating product with the brands that you then see on peoples backs… The list goes on, there isn’t one ‘best thing’ about my job, there are loads of best things!

And the worst?
I’m not a premiership footballer… my dream ever since I was a kid, although my job did enable me to score a goal at Wembley so I can’t complain!

What’s your top tip for people wanting to follow in your footsteps?
My top tip is to always go with your gut instinct, your first thought is normally the right one. And be honest with people.

Denise: Director of Ecommerce & Digital Marketing
WORK THIS WAY

How did you start out in the industry?
I started out by applying for role in a call centre of well-known fashion company in Wales after I left university. I met the owners and we bonded over our mutual interest in modern poetry. Then they offered me a marketing executive role instead!

What do you love about your job?
I love how varied my days can be. Sometimes I’m in far-flung places trying to get under the skin of the local culture, and sometimes I’m at my desk buried in spreadsheets! I get to geek out and be creative all at the same time.

And what’s the hardest thing?
The hardest thing can be the time away spent from home.

What’s your top tip for people who want to be where you are one day?
Don’t think too hard about where you will be in the far-off future. Start in a place that makes you happy – hard work and a positive outlook will get you there!

Verity: Junior Womenswear Designer
WORK THIS WAY

How did you get to where you are today?
I studied womenswear design at uni and then did a lot of internships and worked my butt off. I then interned at Urban Outfitters and got offered a job!

What’s the best thing about your job?
Working with my senior designer as I think we make a pretty good team, and I love seeing my designs being worn by people on the street.

And the worst?
The fact I work in Oxford circus means that my bedroom has turned into a giant wardrobe.

What’s your top tip for people wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Work really hard and don’t give up. If you want it and you have the talent then you will be fine as long as you don’t give up. Part Two’s coming up this weekend – keep an eye out for it!
