A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF OUR DISPLAY TEAMSeptember 29, 2012
They’re responsible for the way our stores look, from the paint on the walls to the light fixtures and places to sit. We reckon their lives sounds pretty exciting…
I’m in Berlin, in our workshop in the Kudamm store – it smells of sawdust and paint and there’s stuff going on everywhere. I love this store. Doesn’t seem like five minutes ago that opened and we were trying to shift a huge mirrored bear from London to here for opening night. The things you end up doing on this job! Today’s all about new lettering for instore, so we’re working with the team to get all the shapes cut and painted. The vibe’s great and there’s music on really loud all day – I don’t know of any other high street stores that have workshops in the basement. It’s fricking awesome.
Today we’re out sourcing materials and looking for inspiration. Berlin’s such a creative city that it isn’t hard to find. There’s something raw about the city that we always try to reflect in the stores’ look and feel; fly postering everywhere, street art all over the place. You kind of can’t help taking it all on board and letting it creep into your work.
Slightly overdid it at White Trash last night and the flight back to London is spent mainly asleep. I’ll head back to the office and check in with the rest of the Creative Team, then pick up my things for tomorrow. Heading to Manchester early in the morning to see what we can do to the store there! The guys are larking about in the office when I get there. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like work at all.
Early mornings – bleurgh. We hit Manchester and head straight to the store, via a coffee shop, of course. We spend some time getting to grips with the place and meeting up with the instore display guys who make all the magic happen. They’re always on the go, painting this, sawing that, gluing here and nail-gunning there. I love the way that you can see the ideas come to life in the workshop – watching them change from an idea to reality is really something. It’s one of the things I love most about the job. That and travelling around.
Today is all-hands-on-deck back in the office to put the final touches to our big trip to the States next week, so there’s paper everywhere and emergency meetings happening all over the place. We’re visiting Washington, Philly and New York, to work on… Well, that’s a secret!
