January 20, 2016

In the lead up to February we’re celebrating creative couples of all kinds; whether it’s a work pal, travel buddy, best friend or boyfriend, everything is better when done together. We catch up with five creative couples around Europe, from photographers and bloggers to surfers and filmmakers, to find out what’s inspiring them right now.

Joanna and Sarah Halpin of fashion and lifestyle blog What She Said, ooze minimal charm. Their style is effortless and perfectly understated. Champions of the breton stripe, the Cornish sisters are our current style crushes. We caught up with them about what it’s like to be best friends with your sister, starting their blog, and what they love about their hometown in Cornwall.

UO: Tell us a little about your story so far

So in the summer we decided to start a sister, lifestyle blog showcasing the things we love, our interests and what we get up to, both together and separately. We have always dreamt of working and potentially travelling together, so starting a blog seemed like a great way to enable this, whilst allowing us to be creative.

UO: Do you come from a creative family or is your creativity your own?

Our granny is very artistic, she used to make pottery and paint. Our mum studied art at school and used to do a bit of print making herself, so we were always encouraged to paint and be ‘artistic’ as children. Art was probably both of our favourite subjects at school. We both took Art at A-Level. Joanna went on to University College Falmouth to study Graphic Design and Sarah is half way through her final year at Leeds College of Art where she studies Surface Pattern and Print Design. When we have the time we would love to incorporate our degrees and love for design into our blog.

UO: What do you miss the most about living in Cornwall?

Our parents and our cats. And then the ocean. Growing up in Cornwall, we couldn’t wait to leave and thought it was probably the more boring place in the world. But since we left we miss it so much, it’s so beautiful and peaceful and we quickly realised how we took it for granted.

UO: What’s your favourite way to spend a lazy weekend at home?

Sleeping in until we naturally wake up (which can be half the day gone) and then sitting around drinking coffee and chatting. Although we speak nearly every day because Sarah is still studying, we don’t get to see each other that often so when we do get time together, spending it doing nothing is great.

UO: What do you love the most about your sister relationship with each other?

We are just the very, very best of friends. Yes we can argue and annoy each other sometimes, but there is no one either of us enjoy spending time with more.

UO: Joanna, how would you describe Sarah in three words?

Moral. Considerate. Creative.

UO: Sarah, how would you describe Joanna in three words?

Loyal. Strong-willed. [Extremely] organised

UO: What are you looking forward to achieving in 2016?

In about six months from now, Sarah will have finished her degree and we hope to model and work on our blog together full time. When we started it in the summer we never thought we would get this much support and have so many opportunities so quickly. The past few months have been a bit stressful as Joanna has been modelling full time and Sarah is still a full time student with A LOT of deadlines, so we haven’t been able to prioritise the blog and give it as much attention as we would like. So we are really looking forward to being able to work on it together and concentrate on the direction we want it to grow and develop.
