Constantly seeking out design inspiration, we made a trip to the boho home of Julie and Franck in the south of France. Situated only 30 minutes from Biarritz, nestled between the mountains and the sea, we caught up with the two free spirits about the surf culture in France and where they seek inspiration.

UO: Hey Julie and Franck! Thanks for opening the doors of your lovely home to us! Can you tell us a bit more about yourselves?

Julie: My name is Julie and I spend a lot of my time chasing creative endeavours. I am a macramé artist, and I create a lot of homeware items such as plant holders and decorative pieces. Macramé is my passion; it provides me with an escape from reality. Luck brought me here to the south of France ten years ago when I fell in love with the Landes, an area that is situated between the sea and forest. I love living here where our lifestyle has a very sweet rhythm: it is idyllic and inspires me every day.

Franck: I’m Franck, Julie’s partner and have been living in Landifornia, as we call the area here, for 15 years now. Since I was a kid I’ve dreamt about living by the ocean and finding a kind of freedom in the day-to-day, so I decided to live that dream when I moved here. I work in Graphic Design.

UO : You built the house yourselves. How did you imagine the place? Did you have any specific design ideas you wanted to fulfil?

We wanted our house to mirror our lifestyles. We imagined a house where we felt well and where we could easily invite friends and family to visit us. We opted for a wooden house, ecological, with a contemporary design that incorporates raw materials such as stone, slate, wood and metal. We also have a huge garage where Franck can tinker and have a place to store found objects. We really wanted a large, overhanging roof that would allow us to spend time outdoors in the winter when it’s often raining and to keep us cool in the summer. The house is very much a product of our peaceful and simple way of life.

UO : We love the boho feel of your home. What inspires your home decor choices?

Our style evolves over the years and the seasons. As we live close to the beach, the mountains and the forest, our environment is our main source of inspiration for our style. I think you see this in the magazines, surf boards, and driftwood all over the place! We also love to have lots of green plants near windows in our home. Many of our decorative accessories are objects we’ve brought back from trips away. We’ve also inherited lots of furniture and antiques from family. We feel like our style really reflects what’s going on in our lives and how we like to live our lives. It’s hard to keep tidy, but we think this is what gives it charm and why it feels like home!

UO : You have a large garden and an amazing, colourful caravan. How important is styling up your outside spaces?

We try to spend as much time outside as possible. Some of our stuff like the caravan arrived later; we reworked it as a reading area and it also acts as a pool house.

UO: How do you like to spend the weekend?

It depends on the moment and of course, the weather… Our weekends can be quite busy but it’s important to have some down time when we all gather together. We are adept at living in the moment and last minute organisation!
