ARTIST OF THE WEEK: KATY WELSH

October 27, 2016

Having recently graduated with a degree in Print Design, Katy Welsh talks to us about her artistic heroes, love of colour and finding inspiration in the mundane. Oh, and Kanye.

UO: When did you decide that you wanted to pursue print making/ pattern design as a career?

I always felt like art was what I would do with my life, but I wasn’t sure which way I wanted to take it until the last minute. When I discovered print design, it seemed like the perfect fit. It was everything I love: illustration, print making, fashion, stationery and interiors. What could be more fun?

UO: Where are the most likely places that you find inspiration?

I would maybe say travel, even around places that may seem mundane. You can find really interesting groupings of colour, shape and pattern in the world when your eyes are open to it.

UO: What is your design process like?

I collect imagery and ideas then start to play with them through drawing and collage. I like to keep the design process pretty free; I really like those happy accidents that can work in an unstructured way. I put things into repeat digitally, and finish off by hand-printing my designs.

UO: Colour is a huge part of your designs; do certain colours have different meanings to you?

I am drawn to intense colours. I wouldn’t say that they have meanings to me but I definitely like to use them to create a mood. For me it’s about being spontaneous, often putting two colours beside one another that you don’t think will work but can look great.

UO: What has been you favourite project to work on so far?

I’m working on something fun at the moment with Ustudio which we are hoping to launch next year, so keep an eye out!

UO: Who are your biggest inspirations in the art and design world?

Matisse, The Bloomsbury Group, Jordy Van Den Nieuwendijk, Atelier Bingo, Karl Joel Larson, Antti Kalevi and Charlotte Trounce are some of my top favourites.

UO: What is the best piece of advice another artist has given you?

To push myself and be ambitious.

UO: As a recent graduate, what tips do you have for anyone who wants to go to art school?

Do it! Art School was the best three years of my ruddy life! But be smart, pick a course that will allow you to explore the areas you are interested in, and when you get there work hard, and enjoy yourself!

UO: Describe your style in three words.

Bold, offbeat, handmade.

UO: What do you like to listen to when you are working?

Today’s mood is a Louis Theroux documentary marathon, but in general I’m a hip hop kind of girl. (I love Kanye like Kanye loves Kanye)
