Photographer Manuel Otigianu takes us to his favourite places in his home city of Milan…

What’s amazing about Milano? The fact that this city is old and new at the same time. So whether your thing is shopping, eating traditional food, experiencing a sparkling nightlife, or visiting the grand Gothic cathedral, you’re totally set. See Milano through my eyes, check out my essential checklist of places to visit.

The Duomo is one of the most famous highlights of this city. 500 years in the making, this is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. For a truly unforgettable experience, climb the 150 steps (or ride the lift) to the roof. On the most unexpected day, the blue sky stretches far beyond the city to the Alps.

Next stop is a spot in Via dei Cappuccini; with its massive black and golden gate this Mansion brings you into a fairy tale atmosphere. In the beautiful garden some pink flamingos are spending their quiet lives, right in the heart of Milano. Bizarre, isn’t it?

Walk through Luini, on a backstreet beside the Duomo, right down via Santa Radegonda, and try the legendary panzerotti – a tiny calzone stuffed with tomato and mozzarella. Quick, cheap and super extra tasty!

If you really want your photo op to be memorable, visit the picturesque Brera district. Wander for hours in the Pinacoteca di Brera, a public gallery, which hosts an amazing collection of fine art from Caravaggio to Bramante and enjoy the beauty of the ancient library inside.

My favourite little spot is the botanical garden in the nearby Brera Palace. It is a peaceful oasis of great beauty – a real surprise in the centre of Milano.

Stop right in front of the triumphal Arco della Pace, situated between the Arena Civica and the Torre Branca. Now serves as the entrance to Parco Sempione, one of the best places in town to enjoy happy hour and experience the “Milano da bere”.

If your ideal dinner is refined and relaxed you have to try Terrazza Triennale. Its unique rooftop offers one of the most beautiful views of the city and is the perfect place to enjoy the skyline of Milano.

Going south you can find The Navigli: a widespread network of canals, partly designed by Leonardo da Vinci. That’s my welcoming alternative to the fashion-obsessed centre. The area bursts with trendy dining and nightlife spots, vintage shops and the occasional gallery. Don’t miss the antiques market on the last Sunday of every month.

Milano is much more than the work-obsessed city it is often portrayed as. Milano is the city where I moved ten years ago. It is my rediscovered hometown, the place that made me fall in love with it. And if you ever have any questions about it you know exactly who to call.
