UO LIVE: NOVELISTOctober 31, 2017
On 26 October 2017 grime MC and producer Novelist went to our Manchester store to perform an exclusive in store gig in collaboration with Eastpak, accompanied by friend and DJ/presenter @damnshaq, who hosted and DJed the event. Almost 1000 people came to the show, where Novelist performed a 45-minute set, spending time talking to the fans before the show and then afterwards meeting everyone and doing a full signing. We caught up with the MC himself to find out more about his work and his futuristic sound…

Have you always been interested in music?
Yes! I’ve since I was 6. I have memories of my parents playing Anita Baker, Eric Bennet and many more.
Where did your stage name “Novelist” come from?
The name Novelist was passed down to me from my uncle.
What inspires your sound and lyrics?
I get my inspirations from circumstances and random things that resonate.
You are an MC and a producer – how do you balance these roles?
I’ve always produced way more than I MC but predominantly the public will see me MC.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is best described as futuristic!
Tell us all about MMMYEH Records!
Mmm Yeh is a movement between myself and my friends. I created it to elevate myself and my friends.
You’ve released quite a few EPs and singles – how do you feel your sound has grown since you began?
I’ve got better at sound manipulation and so much better at sound engineering as well as knowing how to make frequencies work together.
What’s been your best moment so far?
One of my most memorable experiences/performances was with Chase n Status at Wireless Festival.
What’s coming next is MORE Novelist.
