FUTURE NOISE: TOM GRENNAN

Indie artist Tom Grennan has had quite the year. Starting off as one of BBC Music’s Sound of 2017 artists, the singer songwriter is going from strength to strength.

With his debut album “Lightning Matches” on the horizon – mark your calendars for 9th March 2018! – we sat down with him to talk his EPs, Chase & Status and his musical influences…

Have you always been interested in making music?

Not always, when I was young I didn’t have much interest in making music my life was football. It wasn’t until I was 17/18 did my love for writing and creating happened.

What was the first song you wrote?

The first song I ever wrote was ‘Something in the Water’

How would you describe your sound?

I don’t know how to describe my sound, but I’d probably say its humble, fiery and true.

What’s your writing process like?

I don’t really have a process I just tend to go in the studio with a clear head or ideas that I’ve been playing with at home. I do have a ‘washing line’ that I visualise in my head which I use to move words around and put words together and helps me make sense of it.

What have your highlights been so far?

It’s all highlights right now. I’m vey lucky to be where I am right now and the experience right now is amazing! But there’s so much more to do and the highlights will keep coming .

You’ve released quite a few EPs – can you tell us about them and how they differ from each other?

My first Ep was a very stripped back with songs that came really from my bedroom. The second Ep had a bit more production and really showed where I was going and that I’m not just a singer-songwriter.

How did it feel to be featured in BBC’s Sound of 2017?

Amazing, to be on the list with so much talent and have the recognition from the BBC is crazy! I felt very humble when I was told.

How did you end up collaborating with Chase & Status?

The boys heard a song which they loved and invited me in to work with them. I’d been a fan already and to get asked was mental!!

Who are your biggest musical influences?

I wouldn’t say I have many musical influences because I’d be lying because from young my influences were all footballers aha! But I love Amy Winehouse, Robert Johnson, Little Richie, Ray Charles, Arctic Monkeys, Eminem, Dr Dre. Actually, I do listen to loads of stuff!

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

The rest of the year I’ve got some shows in Europe but the main thing is the album next year and get ready for that to come out and hopefully do some damage! Keep up with Tom Grennan on Facebook
