Find out what DJ and founder of Fat Buddha Yoga @iamjessicaskye gets up to day-to-day…

8am – Breakfast Smoothie

First thing after rising and shining, I make a smoothie. I’m not one for a big breakfast but I need some healthy fuel to start the day right. Bananas, frozen berries, vegan protein and almond or oat milk is how I usually roll – it only takes 2 mins to make (and drink) so I’m out the door pronto with a coffee in hand.

10am – Morning Yoga

Morning yoga is such a great way to start the day. It’s a chance to wake up the body, achieve mental clarity and feel positive vibes – especially if you’re feeling the pace or are juggling a task list the length of your arm. I love a dynamic class as it really helps to iron out any kinks in the body and sweat out toxins.

Top tips:

- If you struggle to get up in the morning, book a class the night before…you’re more likely to stick to the commitment to get up and go!

- Be sure to drink plenty of water the night before and have a coffee and small snack an hour before the class begins. It’s important to have some fuel in your system to carry you through – yoga is relaxing but can be intensive, so you won’t reap the benefits on an empty tank.

- Don’t wear make-up. Let your skin breathe… it will thank you for it.

- Set a positive intention to see you through your day and the rest of your week.

- Give yourself permission to live in the moment and enjoy the class as time for you. It may be the only 60-90 minutes that you don’t have to think about anything else.

I discovered yoga on a surf trip to Bali. I took my first class on a total whim, thinking… how hard can it be? It was f*%king hard! But I loved every minute of it. My body ached for days as I’d been using muscles I didn’t know existed, but I left feeling blissed out and euphoric. I was hooked!

Since then I have practised yoga pretty much everyday. I loved that it was dedicated time for me and usually the only 60 mins of the day that I didn’t feel stressed out or worried about something. I also loved what it did for my body. It lengthened my muscles, toned my shape and meant I could eat what I wanted and still fit into my skinny jeans! My skin improved and I became happier, more mindful of who I was, how I behaved and aware of how my actions, words and attitude affected others. It allowed me to understand my body and taught me to listen to my own internal dialogue, and as a result, I became more honest with myself. Yoga really helped me realise what I want from life and I set the intention to steer my own path, to the place and person I want to be.

This is one of my favourite spots for re-fuelling and working!

All I need is good food and solid wifi to get me through and Farm Girl Cafe is the perfect spot. I love everything from the lattes (try the black latte with activated charcoal) to their incredible smoothie bowls. Even the avocado on toast with pomegranate seeds is next level!

3pm: Face Yoga @ Facegym

Late nights and early mornings can take their toll, and after a few hours catching up on emails at Farm Girl I’ve popped to Facegym for a quick session. I love their ethos that you should work the muscles in your face the same way you exercise the rest of your body. I boosted my session with a Cryo Oxygen Workout – a high pressure oxygen and hyaluronic acid treatment! It’s a must try!

6pm РPopped home to quickly sort some tunes for Ministry of Sound and my set at Nobu (and to annoy my fiancé in his studio).

7pm – Fat Buddha Yoga @ Ministry of Sound

One of my favourite residencies, the Ministry of Sound session is all about creating a 4D yoga experience. Club lights with colourful hues, a huge disco ball and surround sound with specially curated Fat Buddha Music mixes for dynamic yoga. It’s a totally consuming experience and different from traditional classes, you forget where you are and there is always such an awesome vibe! Combining yoga and music has always been one of the core USP’s of Fat Buddha Yoga, as well as the inspiring and diverse venues we use for classes. What better way to bring yoga in to your life than throwing down some moves in one of London’s most famous club institutions?!

I’d always wanted to run my own business, so after a few stints in PR and fashion, I was drawn to beauty and then fitness. After discovering yoga, I’d finally found something I loved and truly believed in – for both the mental and physical benefits. I decided this was going to be what I built my business around – selling something that was real and not creating any false needs. Fat Buddha Yoga was founded on the ethos that yoga should be fun, accessible and affordable.

I was already DJ-ing, so it was important to me that music was a central factor to the classes and an aspect that made Fat Buddha Yoga unique. The business launched during the tail-end of the recession in 2013 when public spending was low, so the classes started at just £6.50.

The tone of the classes are real; no hippy-dippy stuff. It’s not about taking yoga too seriously, instead, using it as a tool to escape from the perils of modern life and a chance to do something for yourself, leaving a class feeling better than when you arrived. For some people it’s their first introduction to yoga and an example that not all yoga classes are the same, i.e. breathing, omming, burning incense and listening to Tibetan Chimes.

10pm – DJ Set at Nobu

Last but not least, my final stop for the day is spinning some house grooves for an event at the new Nobu hotel in Shoreditch. It’s been a super long day, but I love getting dressed up and playing some tunes… I could do it for hours! The miso, sushi and cocktails will see me through ’til the early hours.

I’m a huge house, disco and electronic music head! Curating playlists and mixes is one of my favourite past times and I’m lucky enough to do it in my job – whether it be mixing music for Fat Buddha Yoga, my own sets or for brands.

You can find my mixes on Soundcloud, just search “Jessica Skye” or “Fat Buddha Music” and search “Fat Buddha Mixtape” on Spotify.

What tunes are doing it for me right now? Patrick Toppings “Be Sharp Say Nowt” is doing some damage on the dance floor and is currently my go-to tune when I’m doing a set, along with Red Tide by Illyus and Barrientos. If I’m wanting to kick back I love anything ’90s – from chilled Ibiza beats, hip hop and trip-hop by the likes of Massive Attack, Moby, Groove Armanda…the list is endless!
