We’ve got her brand new 2012 mix on the site right now, but we never need an excuse to chat to Annie Mac. She’s just awesome.

CHATTING WITH ANNIE MAC

You studied English literature at uni and now you’re a DJ – how did that happen?
After my BA I did an MA in radio and then worked in loads of little digital and satellite radio stations over a two year period…

What would you be if you weren’t a DJ?
I really wanted to be an actress when I was younger. I didn’t get into an acting course when I was 17 and I thought my life was over.

What’s your favourite animal and why?
Giraffe. Cos they’re MENTAL looking and apparently they cry real tears.

What’s your favourite track from your new album?
There are loads! I’m chuffed we got TNGHT – High Ground on there, but the one I’ve probably listened to the most in my own time is Frank Ocean – Thinking of You.

What makes a gal compile a mix?
I’ve always loved making mixtapes and playlists. I have ones for everything; running round the park, lazing in the garden on a sunny afternoon, plane journeys, etc. This is just a glorified and slightly more professional one of them!

Who are your ones to watch right now?
Lulu James – a very striking girl from Newcastle who has a gorgeous voice and has worked with some great people. Mele – he made a track exclusively for my LP, he’s a young Scouser, with loads of raw talent for making and playing club music. Wild Belle – a boy/girl due from New york that make reggae infused pop music. Love their songs.

Do you have a nickname?
My brothers and sister call me ‘Neezer’. It’s an Irish thing.

Do you ever listen to traditional Irish music – could you fit it into a set?
Haaaa I was force fed enough of that as a child thank you very much! And if I did start fitting a bit into my sets I think the ‘Annie’s lost her marbles’ rumours would start pretty quickly…

What is the BEST thing about your job?
People falling in love with songs that they’ve heard me play on the radio. just spreading the word about amazing music.

Describe yourself in three words.
Affable. Impatient. Loud.

What’s your go-to look?
Boyish, casual. Never too girly. Always with a buttoned up shirt or a pair of clumpy shoes.

What tips do you have for all the bedroom DJs out there?
I would say perfect a mix that you are really happy with, make sure it grabs attention from the start, and then get it online and SELL YOURSELF.

Where do you love to hang out in London?
I love the Hampstead Heath Ponds for the tranquil and outdoorsy side of London. In terms of pubs, I love the Blue Posts in Soho for a drink and I LOVE a walk along the South Bank.

What song makes you dance every time?
Fleetwood Mac – Everywhere

Any music guilty pleasures?
I loved the last Justin Bieber song… The one where he whispers ‘swag swag swag’ all the way through. HAAAAAAAAA.

If you weren’t known as Annie Mac, what would your DJ name be?
Well seing as Annie Mac is part of my actual name that would mean I’d have to make up an entire new and random name. DJ CURLY!?!?! Thank god for my name.
