SPOTLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY: LUCY WILKINSON / MILLY COLLEY

Here at Urban we’re constantly aware of the talent that surrounds us in life, keeping a keen eye on fresh faces with new and exciting ideas. Spotlight was developed to showcase individuals within the world of photography, selecting six young creatives to show off their talent. The concept was simple! We sent a whole load of UO clothes over to our budding photographers with only one rule in mind… Shoot it however you want!

Throughout the coming weeks you can expect photo delights from an eclectic mix of rising talent, selected from all over our beloved Europe. We’ll be interviewing each and every one of them, tapping into their minds, discovering what inspires their life through a lens. Let us kick start with Photographers Lucy Wilkinson and Milley Colley.

What’s your photographic style?
At the moment I carry my camera around constantly and take photos of whatever I find interesting. I mostly use a Japanese low light camera and have got used to knowing what it will capture well. I’ve missed out on taking some really great photos before, so don’t run the risk of being without it anymore.

What’s your favourite subject matter?
My boyfriend and friends. It’s always a little less cringe to take photos of people you know really well and I think that shows in the final shot.

Who are you inspired by?
Photographer wise at the moment – Wolfgang Tillmans, Bruno Zhu and Harley Weir. But in general, publications like The Gentlewoman, Carla Black’s installations, Mark Colle’s flower arrangements, Raf Simons’ designs and Edie Campbell’s dress sense. The most inspirational experience I’ve had recently was visiting the Barbican conservatory, I’d love to live around there one day!

What’s the most valuable lesson you learned within the industry?
Get involved with as many things as you have time for and don’t just rely on your degree to get you by, you’ll need lots and lots of work experience too.

How’s your career going so far?
I have big dreams of getting a job at a fashion head office! I’ve been pretty efficient at getting my education so I’d quite like to take some time out when I finish to do a bit of a Grand Tour and go travelling, take photos, collect weird things and eat good food before it all gets too serious.

Thanks Lucy!

What’s your photographic style?
I’m interested in the overall mood and feelings conveyed by my photographs rather than the technical details in the images themselves. I tend to shoot girls as I favour the subtle curves of the female form and often focus on the interactions between them so my images are usually quite soft, dreamy and whimsical.

Who are you inspired by?
Female photographers Nirrimi Firebrace and Alexandra Sophie are hugely inspirational to me. I also look to films and fairy tales for inspiration and the English countryside which I find achingly beautiful.

What’s your favourite subject matter?
Fashion and femininity. I have a fascination with documenting the transiency and fragility of youth which lends itself well to fashion photography.

What’s the most valuable lesson you have learnt within the industry?
Time goes by so quickly and it’s up to you to make the most out of every day and challenge yourself as much as you can.

How’s your career going so far?
It’s early days but photography is what makes my heart beat faster so I’m hugely grateful to be making it my career. There is so much I hope to achieve photographically over the next few years but I’m feeling hugely positive about the year ahead and I have lots of exciting shoots taking shape.

I am also exhibiting next month at the Parallax Art Fair at Chelsea Old Town Hall, London (February 22nd & 23rd).

Cheers Milly
