SHOPPING WITH MARIA MINERVAFebruary 22, 2013
Maria Minerva: Tall, blonde, attractive, beautiful singer, talented songwriter, chill wave noise-maker, cultured tourer, and most of all, an awesome kind of crazy. We had only one thing on our minds when we approached Maria to be on our blog, you guessed it… SHOPPING!
We paced around UO Marble Arch picking out clothes she loved, wanted, and sometimes contradicted her own personal style. Shortly after we met, she hopped on a plane to Israel to complete her current tour and then whizzed back to her home in New York.
We managed to pick Maria’s brains whilst she dodged about the clothes rails.
Sum up your style in three words…
Casual. Cool. Camouflage.
What accessory can you not live without?
I don’t really do accessories. Except my Marc Jacobs watch! This and having an immigration lawyer make me feel like an adult.
What’s your favourite thing in Urban right now?
I think it has to be this blue House of Holland sweater. The sweater I cannot afford, with a huge letter H on the chest. H as in hypnagogic pop (the wonderful genre of music I am sometimes associated with).
If you were given 100 pounds would you rather spend it on shoes or booze?
Oh, shoes, anytime, or rather – sneakers. I’m obsessed with sneakers over here, finding ways of how to wear them with skirts.
Short skirts or long skirts?
Shorts. I am not pro channeling one’s inner bohemian in a maxi skirt, it was a pretty big trend a few seasons ago. For me it mainly channels being a fashion victim.
Heels or flats?
Both. Sadly I am 5 11 tall so when I wear heels I am channeling my inner LeBron James which is a bit annoying in social situations. It usually means leaving the party with a back pain…
Are you into street style?
Totally. London is great for street style, maybe even a bit more inspiring for me than New York. I am also really fascinated with bad style, bad choices, exaggerated eclecticism etc. Nothing beats this naivete, it’s almost like a weird form of creativity, someone trying so hard but not getting it right. I find people who look perfect, like celebs or whatever – with their freebies and their stylists – really d-u-l-l.
What’s the best place in the world?
In bed in Brooklyn. With my dearest computer.
How many tattoos do you have?
None. I love the tattoo culture though, manifesting your beliefs and whatnot. Apparently I have no beliefs. Once I was seeing this guy who had a tattoo of an artichoke, never figured that one out. Ex-girlfriend?
Are you a throw-it-on-and-go kind of a gal, or do you plan what you’ll wear?
Throw-it-on. Lately I am feeling really clueless about fashion, kinda wishing I had my mother telling me what to wear again.
Is there anything you’d never consider wearing?
Harem pants, tiaras, sheer blouses without a bra, fleece jackets, leopard prints…
Here’s Maria’s top UO picks…
“It’s hard to get laid wearing a jumpsuit, men will probably find you too independent’. It’s fun to channel your inner 80s Joan Collins though. With a touch of Flava Flav in this picture.”
“People often describe my music as ‘outta-this world’, ‘spaced-out’ or ‘dreamy’ … so for me to actually show up wearing a cosmic new-agey print is a no-no. I mean I love this shirt, but I feel one should not give people what they expect from you, especially when it comes to fashion. Also, I am not from California, I am from Estonia.”
“I used to go for this kinda look when I was 18-19. Basically a crop top always conveys one thing and that is a girl’s need for attention. It’s still kinda cool though…”
“Ok this is so not me. I am not a wild child and whatnot, but clothes tell and sell stories. This is a story of a girl who doesn’t give a F.”
“Why go for the girl next door look if you could be the girl from the next… planet yet to be discovered? This dress seems like a good pick for the summer in the city, I can already imagine my thighs sticking onto the NYC subway seats. Can’t wait!”
