MURAL MAKEOVER WITH ABBY JONESMarch 4, 2013
See that awesome piece of illustrated art up top there? Yeah you do! Well that’s the work of artist Abby Jones. We’re excited to announce Abby will be drawing this very piece as a mural at our very own UO Covent Garden. Jolly good.
If you keep keen eyes on our blog , you would’ve noticed how much we love being involved with all the creative minds that merge across our brand, from the people you see in the store to those who work behind the scenes in HQ, there’s an abundance of talented people in our Urban family. You may also have come across Abby before (she featured in Sheet: The UO Zine) and works as a sales whizz kid over in UO Covent Garden. It’s only right she should decorate her own store… right?
We managed to grab a chat with Abby. Here’s what went down…
Hey Abby, love your stuff! How do you start an illustration?
Hello! Usually to start an illustration I just draw whatever is in my head at the time. It can be something that has inspired me throughout the day or something I dreamt about. Details and patterns usually interest me.
What are your favourite things to draw?
My favourite things to draw are crazy worlds, if that makes any sense. There isn’t any pressure for it to look like a specific thing or to even understand it because it’s meant to be a place that doesn’t exist. I want people to look at my work and be intrigued by it.
Is there anything that you really can’t draw?
I really struggle with rooms, perspectives specifically; I find it hard to get the angles. I often find it easier to separate the images then place it all together as opposed to drawing it all at once.
Can you remember the first thing you ever drew?
Oh my god, that was years and years ago! I think it was a cylinder, and then a cup.
What made you decide to study illustration at uni?
It was when I was on my art foundation course and I could not decide, I kept going from one thing to another and my friend told me all about illustration, it just sounded perfect. I enjoy having a brief and time limit otherwise I will just spend forever on a project.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
Being asked to paint a mural in Covent Garden Urban Outfitters. I’m genuinely so excited about this as it’s my first big project.
What would be your dream project?
That’s such a big question. There are a lot of things I would love to illustrate. I think one of my dream projects would be to illustrate a book.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I can’t think of any! So unless they are so hidden not even I know about it then I guess not, although, I do love cooking.
What’s your favourite song?
I am far too indecisive to have a favourite song, however, I am a secret fan of Taylor Swift and have listened to her new song ‘I knew you were trouble’ on repeat. I like Hip Hop though… so I think that makes it okay.
What’s it like working for Urban?
It’s really enjoyable the people are so friendly; they often hire a lot of creative people so it’s nice to be surrounded by ambition. I think I’ve made some of my closest friends there. Not just that but I get a lot of support from the team in my illustration career!
Your pictures have a kinda old-timey quality about them – are you a vintage girl at heart?
Ah I’m an all round 90s kid. I do love a good vintage find, the patterns and colour’s inspire me, but in the extreme’s. I love the colour of the 90s but I also love the vintage look of the 60’s including the washed colours and traditional methods of drawing.
Any top tips for aspiring illustrators out there?
Keep illustrating, keep updating and keep contacting people! I haven’t reached where I want to be yet but hopefully I will do soon!
What’s your favourite word?
Cumquat, because its hilarious
Tell us a joke…
Why did Humpty Dumpty push his girlfriend off the wall?
Because he wanted to see her crack.
Thanks Abby. You’ll be able to check out the Covent Garden mural real soon. Keep your eyes peeled on the UO twitter to find out when it drops…
