ARTY PEOPLEApril 16, 2013
We’ve got the studio fever going on right now at Urban: we’ve been taking every opportunity to invite ourselves to the workspace of our favourite brands (whether they like it or not). Last week we stepped into My Tribe world (handmade bomber jacket craziness), and this week is all about Illustrated People, the East London brand who are shaking up the print scene with their new spring summer collection.
When we first learnt Illustrated People would be dropping their new range of Men’s Tee’s with us we were totally excited – the perfect blend of print and bold colours was right up our strasse. Then we got our research on…just when we thought they couldn’t get any more amazing, they unleashed their spring/summer look book, melting us into ground with their overwhelming visual appreciation. Check out a snippet below:
Being a brand ten years strong in the making, Illustrated People have been dabbling in the print screen scene for quite a while, perfecting the process to create unique prints and awesome designs. Now established as one of London’s up and coming street brands, IP have entered the world of woven fabrics and digital prints, creating a line of men’s tees in which we couldn’t wait to get our hands on.
Enough already. Check out the studio and some questions we shared with the IP gang.
UO:Hello. Who are you?
IP:Lauren (Head of Press at Illustrated People)
UO:In 3 words, tell us about Illustrated People?
IP:Cool Casual Collective
UO:We couldn’t help but notice you have a screen-printing machine, mini-studio and office all up in here! Does this make it easy to get thingsdone?
IP:Init! Welcome to the mad house! It does, it’s nice to get messy sometimes and try out individual prints.
UO:What does one have to do to become an Illustrated Person?
IP:Know how to party and not take yourself too seriously. Simples.
UO:What’s an average day like?
IP:Have a cuppa and a catch up with the girls, blast on the I.D mixtape, maybe do a bit of printing, research, designing, illustration, check out new samples, do fit sets, it depends what time of year it is! It can get mad!
UO:With more clothing brands than we’ve had hot dinners out there, how hard is it to stay different?
IP:Well for us it’s about designing threads that we wanna wear and that we haven’t found out there.
UO:Speaking on your range – The Cathedral, Winged Sleeve and Church tees have a real religious feel to it. Are there regular church sermons held in the office?
IP:Shit! You rumbled us. Nah but church’s are cool.
UO:The spring/summer 2013 video. So, er, yeah….what?
IP:I know right!Friends of ours Pablo and Bradley taught themselves animation last year andwanted to knock up something for us, we pretty much just went with it. It’s a bit of a trip but it’s us so it works.
UO:You have some musically inspired clothing, as well as the likes of Kendrick Lamar sporting your gear. How important is the connection between music and fashion these days?
IP:To be honest who’s not into music? We’re a bunch of young people who wile out at the weekends so it’s a natural that our work/designs reflect that. And Kendrick’s a legend, we’re proud to have him sporting our gear.
UO:What album would best describe Illustrated People then?
IP:Spice Girls –greatest hits! TLC – Now And Forever with a bit of Biggie ‘Ready To Die’ or ‘Life after Death’…or maybe that’s just me.
IP:What a question! Mmm well there’s like 7 of us in the studio so I don’t know to be honest! Probably some rom-com shite mixed with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas with a bit of spring breakers thrown in. Rocky horror picture show maybe?
UO:We’ve noticed you dabble in a few events. Is this something we’ll see more involvement in from you guys?
IP:Yeah definitely, we’ve been waiting to have a party for a while now. We’ll only let you in if you bring us a bottle!
UO:Without giving too much away, what’s in the pipeline this year?
IP:We’ve got a few new projects coming up, more of that good ol’ Illustrated shit.
Nice. Now feast your eyes on the latest Illustrated People photo shoot, featuring one of the designs we have here at Urban Outfitters, a greenhouse, and a whole-lotta smoke.
Here’s the collection we have a fashion boner about.
