How I Style My True Vintage: @natwinter_
At the end of March, UO Oxford Street hosted an in store pop-up with online vintage clothing destination True Vintage (@truevintageclothing). Here, London-based photographer Natalie Winter (@natwinter_) shows us how to combine one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and sportswear originals from the pop-up with new season items to create versatile, standout looks. Over to you, Natalie…
What pieces did you pick up from the True Vintage pop-up?
I picked out a red Ellesse two-piece tracksuit, a baby blue Fila fleece zip-up jacket and a grey Adidas crew neck jumper with pastel yellow sleeves!
Do you often look for vintage pieces or sportswear originals?
Absolutely, yeah! I love vintage sportswear. Sportswear is actually what I predominately dress in, whether it’s vintage or new. I always try to incorporate vintage pieces into my outfits, as you’re likely to be the only one wearing an item when it’s vintage and sometimes, I also find that the logos and colour-ways are much nicer on vintage pieces than newer garments!
What’s your top throwback brand?
Some of my most loved vintage pieces are Fila, but I also love Nike and Champion! It depends on what kind of piece I’m looking for.
Tell us a little about this first look and the inspiration behind how you’ve decided to style it…
I loved the colours of the Fila fleece, so decided to take inspiration from the colour matching trend that’s in at the moment! I really wanted to pick a top and bottoms that matched the darker navy part of the jacket, so the baby blue would really pop. I opted for navy Champion track pants to allow me to stick with the 90s vibe I was going for. I decided to combine them with a crop top, so as to make the outfit that little bit more feminine. I really like the look of the jacket when it’s worn off the shoulders, as it lends the outfit a much more summery feel.
Talk us through this next look and how you’ve styled it…
I thought that the Ellesse tracksuit looked really good on its own! I absolutely love the statement red combined with the navy lines and simplistic detailing. So, I decided to just pair it with an oversized denim jacket in order to bring out the details even more. I completed the outfit by accessorising with this little cross body bag, which I think is so cute! The text on it really stands out against the outfit and gives the whole look that extra statement detailing.
And for your final outfit…
In the other two looks, I styled the True Vintage pieces with tracksuit bottoms, so for this look I wanted to try styling the jumper with a dress in order to create an outfit that’s a little more adaptable for Spring. I chose this black metallic slip dress so I could wear the jumper either over the dress or tied around my waist. I wore the jumper normally, with a statement checked bum bag worn as a cross body, to create a casual but cute outfit. I also mixed it up a little and wore the jumper tied around my waist with a cropped wind breaker over it, in order to lend the vintage piece an entirely different look and feel. Two outfits in one essentially!
Can you give us any advice for styling vintage pieces with new season items?
Most of the time I choose to style vintage pieces with newer items, as I like the contrast it lends an outfit. Personally, I would pick one vintage piece and then pair it with newer garments that you think will look super cute with it. I love crop tops under oversized vintage fleeces and zip up jackets! Sometimes, I also really like to mix vintage sportswear with new sportswear. For example, in the first look I styled, I paired the vintage Fila fleece with new season Champion joggers, which also have a vintage look to them. I absolutely love the combination of the two, and this is a look which is easy to replicate and refresh!
