Melt! Festival with @juliahlm
Festival season is ON. But which ones to go to and what to wear? Julia Helm (@juliahlm) headed to Melt! Festival in Germany to bring us the lowdown on the open-air electronic weekender and to share her effortless, festival style tips. Over to you, Julia…
It’s my favourite time of the year – not only is it summer, but it’s also festival season! This year, I decided to start with MELT! Festival, one of the biggest open-air electronic music festivals in Germany. It takes place in a huge, open-air industrial museum called Ferropolis – also known as ‘the city of iron’. These giant structures are like nothing you’ve ever seen before and make for an incredibly dramatic backdrop to the stage lighting and visual effects.
I actually went to MELT! last year too and absolutely loved it! But this year’s line-up was arguably even better. Before we arrived at the festival, I was super excited for The xx, Florence and the Machine, Cigarettes After Sex, Mura Masa, ZHU and many of the smaller stage artists too.
DAY ONE – THURSDAY
Sometimes, a band t-shirt is all you need. I'm in love with this Iron Maiden one because it's just the softest material and super easy to style. Just throw it on with some vintage-inspired denim shorts and white trainers, and you're ready to go!
This year, my boyfriend and I decided to rent a big car and sleep in that instead of camping! And what can I say? Other than it was the BEST IDEA EVER! We had so much space and slept so well. We arrived a day before the festival started but there was already loads of people getting set up in the camping area and we quickly made friends with our neighbours. Which for me, is what festivals are all about. You get the chance to get to know so many cool people who you can connect with easily as everyone is super relaxed and in high spirits!
After setting up camp, we decided to go for a stroll around the stages to soak up the atmosphere before going to watch Monolink. If you don’t know him – definitely check out the song ‘Burning Sun’. It’s the most calming, yet euphoric song on earth. I highly recommend! After his set, we went to sleep (in our car) because we wanted to be fighting fit for the official start of the festival!
DAY TWO – FRIDAY
I really don't like taking too many clothes to a festival. That's why wearing one piece in so many different ways makes me super happy! Take this crochet playsuit for instance. During the daytime, I wore the playsuit over my bikini and if it got a bit chilly during the evening hours (or if I was just feeling something a little different), I'd put a skirt and belt on over it. Simple!
On Friday, we got up early, grabbed morning coffees and took them down to the lake – a beautiful part of the festival area. It was reaching heights of 30 degrees every day whilst we were there, so the lake became such a great place to hang out, people watch and relax.
Later, our friends joined us and we went to the main festival area to see Cigarettes After Sex, Tyler The Creator and my personal favourite, ZHU. We danced non-stop during his set and the atmosphere was absolutely electric!
DAY THREE – SATURDAY
I've been wearing animal print throughout summer, so I just had to incorporate it into my festival wardrobe! I love the look. To mix it up a bit, I like to style the timeless print with lots of different textures. Saturday's look consisted of corduroy pants paired with a sheer animal print shirt which I layered underneath a cotton graphic tee.
Just like the day before, on Saturday we got up and went straight down to the lake to chill out. The only difference was that I was pretty hungover (woops), but I certainly felt a lot better after drinking two litres of fresh water.
In the evening, we went down to the main arena to see IAMDDB, ODESZA and The Blaze. All three acts were amazing! What makes Melt! so good is that despite the fact that over 22,000 people attend the festival each year, you can always get a good place at the front of all of the stages. It’s perfect for music lovers who are heading there with a group of friends. You can dance and enjoy each other’s company without getting lost in crazy crowds!
DAY FOUR – SATURDAY
Bold, colourful pieces work so well for festivals! After all, where else can you make such a statement? For Sunday's look, I paired this wonderful yellow checked jumpsuit with my white Buffalo platform sneakers. It's such a stand out outfit (plus, the platforms make you look way taller than you actually are).
On the last day of the festival, some our friends left early so we decided to hang out with this couple from Hamburg we’d met earlier in the week. It was so fun! I really like the community spirit of festivals. Everyone is there simple to enjoy a shared experience and make unforgettable memories against a backdrop of incredible music.
In the afternoon, we walked around to check out the smaller stages we hadn’t been to before going for a final dip in the lake. It was amazing! We spent the afternoon dancing at the forest stage, making the most of the sun, the sounds and the good vibes. We then headed back to the main stage, grabbed some yummy food from one of the many delicious food vendors and watched the sunset. As night fell around us, The xx took to the stage – I was so excited! This was only the second time I’d seen them perform and they were just as amazing as I’d remembered. Afterwards, we danced until the early hours to Mura Masa before falling asleep (we were SO tired). Tired but super happy!
