How I Style My True Vintage: @bushybroweth
At the end of March, UO Oxford Street hosted an in store pop-up with online vintage clothing destination True Vintage (@truevintageclothing). Here, London-based model Ethan Richards (@bushybroweth) shows us how to combine one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and sportswear originals from the pop-up with new season items to create versatile, standout looks. Over to you, Ethan…
What pieces did you pick up from True Vintage pop up?
I decided to go for a soft blue and navy striped Tommy Hilfiger jumper, multi-coloured retro Ralph Lauren oversized heavy knit jumper and a purple Christian Dior cotton bomber jacket with green and white accents!
Do you often look for vintage pieces or sportswear originals?
Definitely, yeah. I love to mix and match the old with the new! I always try to incorporate vintage elements into every outfit that I style for myself. It’s all about striking the right balance between vintage and new season, as well as ensuring that you’re always matching the right pieces together to create outfits with a consistent look and feel.
What’s your top throwback brand?
I like a variety of brands, but I think I’d have to go with Ralph Lauren if I’m picking my most favourite. I’m a big fan of all the vintage-inspired polos and jumpers with the bear graphics and embroidery! As well as their oversized retro jumpers and vintage track jackets.
Tell us a little about this first look and the inspiration behind how you’ve decided to style it…
For this first look, I decided to pair the multi-coloured retro Ralph Lauren oversized heavy knit jumper I chose from True Vintage, with a pair of tailored black chinos from Edwin and some Reebok Club C 86 black trainers! I guess I was going for more of a skater vibe with this look, emphasised by the contrast in the oversized fit of the jumper and the tapered leg of the trousers. Combining a statement vintage piece, tailored trousers and a simple pair of heritage trainers is a great way to create a versatile skater look that can be worn in a variety of different ways.
Talk us through this next look and how you’ve styled it…
For this look, I decided to style the soft blue and navy striped Tommy Hilfiger jumper with a pair of combat-style camo cargo trousers from Dickies and some throwback red trainers from the Reebok X Opening Ceremony collaboration. This is the kind of look I go for when I’m wanting to wear something a little more comfortable. Adding a bright pop of colour to an outfit, especially when you’re incorporating vintage pieces which may be a little more worn, is the perfect way to give any outfit a fresh look and feel.
And for your final outfit…
For this final look, I wanted to go for something a little more elevated and stylish. So, I decided to pair the vintage Christian Dior jacket I picked up with some fresh, clean cropped denim jeans and a statement pair of Vans Old Skool metallic trainers. I love this look as it’s really versatile! It retains a casual feel whilst also featuring standout elements that take the whole outfit to the next level. I really wanted to emphasise the Dior jacket, so opted for jeans in a classic blue wash to do just this. I’m a big fan of this outfit!
Can you give us any advice for styling vintage pieces with new season items?
I think it’s always most important to adhere to a colour scheme, rather than focusing too heavily on branding when it comes to mixing vintage pieces with new season bits. Some people become fixated and obsessed with branding, wanting to get as many different labels into one outfit as possible, which often leaves an outfit looking quite mismatched and far too label heavy. I’d suggest picking a colour palette or a certain vibe, then mixing in the appropriate new and old pieces to create the look you’re going for!
