AW18 Edit: In Berlin with @vanellimelli
Berlin-based creative Melanie Kieback (@vanellimelli) has effortless style down to a T. Drawing inspiration from 90s fashion icons, her exclusive UO AW18 Edit features an eclectic mix of animal print, vintage-inspired pieces and the cold weather staples she wears year after year. Over to you, Vanelli…
When I consider my own personal style, I think it’s easy to see the inspiration I’ve drawn from major 90s figures. Winona Ryder, Julia Roberts and Kate Moss are three of my greatest style icons. I love to emulate that effortless 90s-inspired feel in my day-to-day looks, by incorporating simple cotton tees, classic denim fits and plenty of animal print.
The best way to describe my every day style is ‘comfortable’. I love loose high-waisted pants paired with a t-shirt or tank top, sweater and some sneakers or ankle boots. I like to mix it up with different accessories such as vintage sunglasses, plenty of delicate gold jewellery and statement belts!
I’m a huge fan of autumnal dressing. I get so excited at the thought of all the amazing statement jackets I’ll finally be able to wear. Some people collect handbags, I collect jackets. I also love all the cute hats, cosy jumpers and black ankle boots that accompany the colder weather. During autumn, you’re actually able to wear a complete outfit and not just a dress with sandals, which is one of my favourite things about the season!
When it came to pulling together my AW18 edit, I instantly gravitated towards pieces I’ve wanted in my wardrobe for some time. I’ve been on the search for the perfect pair of army pants for ages, so was super excited to find this customised vintage Urban Renewal pair! I’m also a huge fan of crop tops and bodysuits, so plenty of those found their way into my selection. I’ve a keen eye for details too, so I added in some workwear pants. They’re a staple autumnal piece and a little eye-catching too. They’re also super practical, which is great as I love the freedom of not having to carry a bag (unless it’s a bumbag of course).
During the much colder weather, I rely on my winter style staples – Dr. Martens (with warm, thick socks), a huge cosy scarf and a fluffy jacket that feels like a blanket. Incorporating these into the outfits I wear throughout the season not only gives me a consistent look but also lends a warm, cosy feel to my wardrobe (which I love).
Clothes aside, one of the most important things to do throughout winter is to take care of your skin! I wish I had a full-proof skincare routine that I could share with you, but I don’t unfortunately. However, during the winter months, I always make a consistent effort to use more oil-based products, instead of water-based ones. I do this to really ensure I’m giving my skin the extra TLC it needs during the cold weather.
If you’re heading to Berlin anytime soon, there’s plenty of places you should check out! If the weather is warm and sunny, the Tempelhofer Feld is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Take some time to enjoy a little picnic and soak up the beautiful sunset. Also, Klunkerkranich and Weinbergspark are wonderful places to spend time when the weather’s lovely, even though they can become a little crowded at times. Berlin is a great city though! There’s nothing better than spending a late evening amongst its streets with your friends, enjoying delicious food and hitting a few bars!
